MatthewRhys出生于南威尔士的历史名城卡迪夫,并在那里长大。他从小就受威尔士语的教育,威尔士语是他的第一语言。17岁时,因在学校音乐剧Elvis中扮演主角,Rhys意识到他并不适合在农场或者在军队里工作,于是他申请入读位于伦敦的享有盛名的皇家戏剧艺术学院。在被录取后不久,1993年,他被授予PatriciaRothermere奖学金。在皇家戏剧艺术学院的那段时间,Rhys在《Back-Up》和《HouseofAmerica》中演出,然后他回到家乡Cardiff用母语在威尔士电影《BeBrave》中演出,为此,他赢得了英联邦威尔士电影和电视艺术奖中的最佳男演员奖。
